In a move to empower youth and strengthen educational opportunities, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the Honhaar Scholarship Scheme during a grand ceremony at Punjab University. This initiative, coupled with an upcoming phase of the laptop distribution program, aims to support deserving students and encourage merit-based academic excellence.
Event Highlights
The launch event commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by the national anthem and a moving rendition of Allama Iqbal’s poetry by GC University’s musical society. CM Maryam Nawaz distributed scholarship cheques to deserving students, reiterating her commitment to transforming education in Punjab.
Key Details of the Honhaar Scholarship Scheme
The scholarship scheme received an overwhelming response, with 70,000 applications submitted. Out of these, 30,000 scholarships will be awarded:
- Male Students: 18,000 scholarships
- Female Students: 12,000 scholarships
The initiative is designed to uplift talented yet underprivileged students, offering them a chance to pursue higher education without financial constraints.
Interest-Free Loan Program
During her address, the Chief Minister also announced an interest-free loan program aimed at helping students start their own businesses. These loans, valued at millions of rupees, will be repayable in easy installments, alleviating financial burdens and enabling students to focus on their future goals.
“These loans will empower students to work with peace of mind and contribute positively to society,” stated CM Maryam Nawaz.
Upcoming Laptop Distribution Program
In a continuation of Punjab’s efforts to modernize education, the next phase of the laptop distribution scheme is set to begin in January. The Chief Minister emphasized that all resources, including scholarships and laptops, will be distributed fairly and on merit, ensuring no bias based on political affiliations.
“This merit-based program will turn the dreams of underprivileged students into reality,” she added.
Education as Pakistan’s Identity
Highlighting the critical role of education, CM Maryam Nawaz called on students to prioritize their studies over distractions.
“Slingshots, stones, and spiked sticks are not the identity of Pakistan. Our identity lies in students pursuing education in colleges and universities,” she remarked.
The Chief Minister also criticized previous administrations for neglecting education, assuring attendees of the current government’s unwavering commitment to securing students’ futures.
Merit-Based Opportunities
For the first time, the scholarship program extends eligibility to:
- Students from 15 private universities
- Position holders from matriculation and intermediate exams
Dr. Farukh Naveed, Secretary of Higher Education, elaborated on the program’s inclusivity, highlighting its focus on providing equal opportunities for talented students across Punjab.
Warm Interaction with Students
CM Maryam Nawaz’s interaction with GC University students added a personal touch to the event. Scholarship recipients were honored with a guard of honor by the police contingent, signifying the importance of their achievements.
This landmark initiative underscores Punjab’s dedication to fostering a brighter, more educated future. With scholarships, laptops, and interest-free loans, the government is empowering students to achieve their dreams and contribute meaningfully to society.
